About Coracle and Podcasts

Coracle provides professional development services to the maritime sector. Our eLearning products are being used by students from around 60 countries and we operate as the exclusive provider of eLearning to the maritime sector for courses designed to prepare students for Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) professional exams.

It is our belief that the bedrock of a successful industry is training and education and that it is inconceivable to imagine a modern world where the internet doesn’t play a part…

…eLearning is a powerful method of delivering information that can make a significant difference to how quickly students master a skill; how easy it is to study and how much they enjoy learning. eLearning is recognised as being able to contribute to all objectives for education: raising standards; improving quality; removing barriers to learning and upskilling in the workplace.

As part of our approach to supporting the industry and those in the industry, Coracle provides free-to-air podcasts via a range of online distrubutors including ShippingPodcasts.com, iTunes, Podcast Alley and Blubrry, Jellycast etc.

We also provide code widgets for you to embed your preferred podcasts directtly on your site. (See Maritime Executive for an example)
You can get your own widget here

Coracle’s podcasts were initially created to support students who would otherwise find accessing timely and relevant content difficult. The podcasts have proved popular throughout the industry and our range of coverage has grown rapidly.
(Downloads exceed 1,000 per day and we are regularly in the Jellycast Top 10)

About Podcasts

The word podcast describes a digital media file that is being distributed over the internet and although the name comes from mixing ‘iPod’ and ‘broadcast’, podcasts are not just for iPod users: any mp3 player can be used and in reality the vast majority of podcasts are listened to or viewed via a listeners computer.

Whilst it is possible to offer files for direct streaming and downloading from a website, a podcast is differentiated from other formats by its ability to be syndicated (subscribed to) and downloaded automatically when new content is added. This is made possible by using RSS (really simple syndication). The great advantage of RSS is that the user doesn’t have to go and look to see if there is new content, they are alerted to the fact that it is there as soon as it is available.

How do we produce our podcasts?

We convert market reports to audio files, record interviews with leading industry figures and produce recordings of industry seminars.

Our podcasts are presented by our Sony Award winning journalist Katie Breathwick. Katie can also be heard reading the morning news on the UK’s national classical radio station, Classic FM.
